Each Custom Shop Limited Edition instrument is only available for a short time, which makes it eminently collectible and adds to its investment value. Crafted with many features reserved only for certain artists and master built instruments, they are just what the name says they are: highly anticipated limited-edition models that go very quickly.

This 70’s Telecaster Custom is one that we were lucky enough to secure at the Fender Custom Shop 2020 Summer sales event – and in the hand it’s every bit as amazing as it was on paper. With classic Telecaster bite from the Black Guard bridge pickup and rich bass/clear treble provided by the CuNiFe humbucker in the neck, this Tele is loaded with tonal options. The Bigsby B-5 pushes the cool-factor right over the top.

Developed by Seth Lover, who joined Fender in 1971, the “cunife” pickup features a two-coil humbucking design that uses 12 cunife screws connected on the bottom by a steel plate. Cunife is an alloy named for its three constituent metals—copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and iron (Fe)—and in instrument pickups it produces a distinctive “hi fidelity” sound with rich bass and clear treble, and they never lose their attack or definition when pushed. We used samples of the original magnets to develop these pickups over a two-year period, and we’ve brought the material back exactly as it was 40 years ago.
